Amazon Wants to Deliver Packages with Self-driving Cars

At Amazon, preparation has begun to deliver packages using self-driving vehicles. The ultimate goal of the company is to be independent of external delivery services.

As has already been reported in the press, the company is not simply looking to develop a special vehicle or a fleet of vans. Instead, Amazon is endeavouring to exploit the opportunities offered by self-driving cars. The current project has been in the pipeline for more than a year, already.

However, the project is still in its initial stages but Amazon’s efforts to be independent of external delivery services and to utilise new technologies to do so have been evident in recent months.

Among the developments that have been reported, in addition to a self-driving car, is a patent filing for a special road network system, so-called reversible lanes. The idea is supposed to enable self-driving Amazon trucks to adapt to changing traffic situations.

As we have written about, Amazon is not alone in the effort to produce a viable self-driving car: more and more companies are announcing their intention to produce the (self-driving) car of the future. Even Deutsche Bahn is looking to solve it’s so-called “last kilometre” with the development of an autonomous vehicle fleet. Tests of an autonomous passenger transport are already being run on a closed DB site.
