Deutsche Post is Expanding with a Start-up that Builds Electric Trucks

In 2014 Deutsche Post bought the Startup StreetScooter and became an automotive manufacturer. It’s first product is called, WORK, a purely electric transport vehicle, which is now available in different versions.

To date, the vehicle has been well received. As the Deutsche Post DHL Group recently reported, the company plans to double the production of the StreetScooter vehicles by the end of 2017, with the goal of manufacturing 20,000 units. The increased annual production will be spread over two models WORK (with four cubic meters of cargo volume) and the WORK L (with eight cubic meters).

So far Deutsche Post has produced the StreetScooter models exclusively for itself, but this is set to change. According to Jürgen Gerdes, the Group’s CEO, there is strong demand for e-trucks. Deutsche Post has some restrictions, however, and wants to deliver the WORK vehicles firstly to strategic partners, large fleets and municipalities.

External stakeholders are not only local but also from abroad. Models from StreetScooter will also be used in Great Britain, Czech Republic and Poland, as well as in New York, San Francisco and Beijing. In addition, Deutsche Post is currently investigating whether the e-vices could be of interest to partners in Thailand and India.

In order to implement expansion plans, the company will increase production in Aachen as well as building another production facility in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to Gerdes, in the future the StreetScooter could potentially be produced in ten locations to create a volume of 100,000 pieces per year. It is even possible under certain circumstances that Deutsche Post’s automobile division could go public.

The WORKPure, the basic model of StreetScooter, currently costs 32,000 euros, can be loaded with up to 710 kilograms and comes with a power charge about 80 kilometres. Deutsche Post offers a charging infrastructure for all models. The network of certified workshops will be gradually expanded so that they can repair partners’ e-mobiles in the future.

The expansion of StreetScooter production has seen Deutsche Post secure a clear lead over its competitors. Mercedes, for example, is also planning to bring electric vans onto the market for Hermes some time in 2020. Volkswagen, on the other hand, plans to deliver an electric vehicle this autumn.
