QS World University Ranking for 2016/2017

Another in our series of posts which examines issues related to studying and research, this time a worldwide ranking of universities.

The QS (Top Universities) ranking for 2016/2017 has just been released, and as in previous years US and UK institutions dominated the top standings. As we have seen in other rankings, however, there has been a significant improvement in the rankings from universities from emerging economies.

For the fifth consecutive year the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was number 1, followed by Stanford, Harvard and the University of Cambridge. The only non-UK or US institution in the top 10 was Switzerland’s ETH Zurich.

The most successful German university was the University of Munich which ranked in 60th place. Four German universities made it into the top 100. The best rated was the Technische Universität München (60), followed by the Ludwig Maxmilians-University Munich (68), Heidelberg University (72) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (98).

As in previous years, universities from Asia were highly ranked (such as the National University of Singapore 12th and Nanyang Technological University 13th) but it was universities from China and Russia that showed the most significant progress.

China now has three universities in the global top 50 (Tsinghua =24, Peking University 39th, and Fudan University 43rd). The majority of Russian universities featured in the ranking have also improved their positions this year, four of them by more than 100 places, although no Russian university has yet ranked in the top 100.
